WAKE UP CALL AMERICA!

The water emergency in Flint, Michigan affected thousands of men, women and children, exposing them to massive levels of lead contamination, among many other potentially dangerous contaminants in the tap water. For more than two years, most residents in Flint, Michigan were unaware that their municipal water supply contained dangerous levels of lead and other harmful contaminants, because the newer and more privileged homes selected by the water authorities for testing did not show high levels of lead.

DRINKING WATER: A STATE OF NATIONAL CRISIS

Flint water crisis has sparked concern for aging water systems nationwide. Some cities like Chicago still use ancient wooden pipes. The issue has hit the Senate floor and the debate has begun! The Defense Department says that the military plans to examine whether chemicals from firefighting foam may have contaminated 664 sites across the nation. Elevated lead has been found in Detroit and Newark schools’ drinking water supply. Similar problems were reported on the front page of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Friday, July 1st, 2016: “14 Atlanta Schools Show High Lead Levels”. On front page articles on July 17th and 18th, 2017, New York Post reported high levels of lead in 1 out of 20 New York City school tap water, and that a fountain in Brooklyn Elementary school had lead levels higher than Flint. Schools in Boston recently reported high levels of lead in their drinking water.

Elevated levels of chemicals have been found in Maynard, Massachusetts drinking water supply that may pose risk to pregnant women and infants. The unregulated chemical, 1,4-dioxane has been found in the drinking water supply in Bergen County, New Jersey. 1,4-dioxane can damage the liver, kidney and respiratory system. The chemical, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), linked to a host of health problems, has been found in the water supply in North Jersey and in many states across the country. Drinking water concerns have arisen in North Bennington, Vermont. According to Vermont Public Radio, high levels of the carcinogen perfluorooctanoic acid were found in the water of 29 of 34 private wells.

PHILIDELPHIA ACTRESS SUES CITY CLAIMING LEAD POISON COVER-UP

A Shakespearean actress, Eleni Delopoulos, 39, who lives with her 4-year-old son and husband, filed a class-action law suit on June 2, 2016 in Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas. Represented by a national law firm, Ms. Delopoulos alleges that the city put her family – and tens of thousands of other Philadelphians – at a “significantly greater risk” for lead poisoning. The suit contends the City has been aware of high levels of lead in the tap water for years and failed to warn residents of contamination. It also alleges that the City rigged the results of its water tests to produce “a woefully inaccurate picture” of lead contamination in Philadelphia. Mike Dunn, spokesman for Mayor Kenney, said the City was aware of the suit and had no comment at the moment.

NEWARK, NEW JERSEY IN STATE OF CRISIS

The City of Newark in the state of New Jersey has been facing a potentially widening public health crisis over drinking water. Many residents are angered and raised questions about whether the City’s negligence has placed young children at risk. Like Flint, Newark has a large Black population and a high poverty rate. An engineering study commissioned by the City found measures to prevent lead from leaching into the City’s drinking water were failing at one of two of Newark’s two treatment plants. The State warned that children under 6 should not drink unfiltered tap water. The levels of lead in Newark is one of the highest recorded by a large water system in the United States. New Jersey state and city officials have failed to treat the water and neglect to notify residents about elevated levels of lead found in the drinking water and associated health risks. According to NRDC, an international environmental advocacy group, for years, the City of Newark had the greatest number of lead-poisoned children in the state of New Jersey.

2,000 SYSTEMS FAIL LEAD TEST REQUIRING WATER FILTRATION SYSTEM

According to USA Today, almost two thousand drinking water apparatuses have failed lead testing across the country since 2012, a public health concern that requires them to notify customers and take action. Experts say, “on faucets where water is used for drinking and cooking, consider installing a water-filtration system that reduces lead”. We recommend Multipure drinking water systems. Multipure is NSF certified, meets the challenge and delivers!
